Friends, I just finished reading the interview with Michael Jarrett in the
latest Elvis: The Man And His Music. It's the most entertaining
Elvis-related interview I have read in years, perhaps EVER! What a fantastic
storyteller this guy is, and the way he talks sure put a smile on my face.
This is a MIGHTY cool man!
"I got my education in the blues with the music of B.B King, Jimmy Reed and
Muddy Waters. That was music with a feeling, get down in the alley music and
stay there all night!"
Jarrett is the writer of "I'm Leavin'" and "I'll Be Home On Christmas Day".
He talks about how, when and where he wrote those songs -- the latter stoned
and alone on Christmas Eve 1969 -- and he also talks a lot about Elvis'
versions which he clearly loves. He's even familiar with the outtakes --
about the bluesy versions of the x-mas song, he says, "Oh, they're the best!
They're my favourite of all, expecially take 4..." and then goes on to
praise the "I Sing All Kinds" FTD and discuss the live version of "I'm
Leavin'" as heard on "Southern Nights"! VERY interesting stuff.
Thanks Arjan Deelen and EMM for this GREAT article!
